I try not to let it bother me, but I’ve even been in shows that are CLEARLY chicano or raza based in theme, and curators still let white folks tell our story and be ALL up in the mix. It’s not only annoying, it’s hurtful. a-la-maquina
Since when is being a “Chicano” a trend? I came across these (and many more) on Instagram in the chicano tag. We have a dude in England using “c/s” and “viva la revolucion” as something meaningless as well as Japanese artists appropriating Aztec and Chicano imagery as an edgy trend. I don’t think my eyes can roll any further… And Why do I keep seeing Megan Fox used as a model for tattoos and drawings even done by fellow Chicanos?!
They wanna be us so bad.
The gray painting is by OG Spider, a Chicano. But yes we’ve been ripped off so many times by people. Everyone really does want to talk like us, get tattoos like us, and dress like us.
Thank you for clarifying. I still don’t get why use a white womyn’s face though?
HOMEGIRL, YEEEEEEES!!! Thank you for speaking on this. This (and similar issues I have) is exactly why I took my Brown ass off Instagram…
& that’s a whole other issue I have… ^
When I was younger I used to think it was flattering, they were from the hood, etc. but as I got older and learned about cultural appropriation, white privilege, realized they are making a living off of our stories (good and bad), and are just not actually down, it really started to bother me. I especially don’t like it when white artists mix Chicano symbols with white… culture? Would you call it culture? Haha
